My Echo Interview

DESCRIBE YOUR BAND IN 5 WORDS?

Rock n Roll infused with Punk Rock

ARE YOU EXCITED TO PLAY GROOVE IN THE MOO?

100% we are completely honoured and stoked to be a part of it.

HOW LONG WAS THE PROCESS IN MAKING YOUR EP?

About a week in the studio.

ARE THERE ANY ARTISTS YOU HOPE TO WORK WITH IN THE FUTURE?

Oh that’s a tough question… That’s an awesome question. We are just releasing our EP through a record label called Ten To Two Records and they also just released a record for Chuck Ragan who’s an American artist from Hot Water Music. Chuck has just released his side record and working with him would be incredible for all of us because he’s an artist we have all listened to since we were pretty young.

I’ll write that one down!

DOES MY ECHO GET ALONG INSIDE AND OUTSIDE BAND LIFE?

We do indeed we are all very, very good friends. We’ve all known each other for quite a long time so we pretty much talk to each other everyday. We are best mates and I would say inseparable!!

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY THE MOST ABOUT BEING A MUSICIAN?

Being able to spend time and tour the country with your best mates. Meeting new people and making new friends while sharing your music with new faces around the country. It’s pretty special. Best friends and touring its pretty awesome!

WHAT SONG ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?

I think our new single Lonesome City. It’s the last song we recorded for the EP. Its that song that we stepped back from and said yeah this is MY ECHO.  This is where things are going to go and this is how we want to write music together.  So Broken City definitely.

ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR NATIONAL TOUR?

Yeah definitely. Weekends away again playing shows around the country for some of our favourite venues and just getting out and having a good time. Including seeing friends we haven’t seen for a while and playing with some amazing bands that we all are big fans of.

WHAT CITY ARE YOU MOST EXCITED TO PLAY IN??

We always have a pretty good time in Adelaide. We have played some really good shows there. Love the vibe.

DOES THE BAND EVER CENSOR THEMSELVES? LIKE IN THE WRITING STAGES HAVE YOU EVER WRITTEN ANYTHING AND THEN DECIDED IT WAS TOO HARSH?

I think maybe a couple of times I’ve had to tell Brenton our vocalist to tone something back because he may be having a bit of a dig at a specific person. Whether it is someone we have worked with or a person or relationship. It’s happened a couple of times. There’s been a few curse words that have been a little bit graphic also.

For us we are not that type of band that really goes out to shock and to do anything like that. We want to write songs about personal experiences. A lot of our songs are more upbeat with lyrics on sharing our time together and being on the road.

ANY TIPS FOR UPCOMING MUSICIANS??

Make honest music. Make the music for where you want to place yourself. Don’t make music for other people. Also network, I think networking is something that is really important for young bands and young musicians. Go out, go to shows and meet other bands especially similar artists. Then you can gel with them and play shows with them because it’s always really helpful.

WHICH ARTISTS DO YOU LOOK UP TO?

As a band we all have pretty broad influences that we draw from. I think collectively there’s a few artists we all have listened to over the years. Like Joe Strummer from the Clash that we all grew up on so punk rock and that sort of thing. At the moment we are all really into a country artist by the name of Justin Townes Earle. He has this amazing knack of writing really simple songs but telling incredible stories through them. Another band we are all really big fans of is Against Me. Fronted by Laura Jane Grace who was Thomas James Gabel, which is an amazing story in itself about someone suffering from transgender. But she again writes these incredible songs with amazing stories but still really simple.

ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT TO ADD?

Our self-titled EP is out on the 2nd of May through Ten To Two Records.

And of course the National Tour around the country starts on May 10. We are playing at some amazing venues with some incredible bands. So we hope people come and support the Australia live music scene!
