TV writer RHIANNON POPE takes a look back at cult 90s/00s TV show Charmed and why it doesn’t need a prequel reboot.
Charmed was a television show in 1998 to 2006 following three/four sister who find out they’re witches destined to fight demons and other things that go bump in the night. Similarly to Buffy The Vampire Slayer the show was big on girl power and women in control but it also promoted the power of family and sisterhood which is why the Charmed reboot in the works is A Giant Mistake!!!!!
Prue, Piper, Phoebe Halliwell and later half sister Paige Matthews are from the Warren family of witches dating back to the witch trials. Their ancestor Melinda Warren foresaw the charmed ones: three sisters with the power of three who are ultimately powerful.
There are hundreds of demons that can only be killed by the power of three and the bond of sisterhood gives them power. The in-the-works reboot has none of the Warren Witches as it is set in the 70s following three strangers who can supposedly tap into the power of three.
Even if they can’t this is a BAD IDEA! What made charmed so popular was the bond between the sisters because at heart it was about family sticking together through everything. The new reboot seems to be a way to get fans of the old show to watch this under the guise of it’s the same universe but there are some key issues.
Since it’s set before Charmed so nothing really matters. It will have no lasting impact on the Charmed universe. If it was the story of the charmed ones’ grandmother Penny than that would be different. Penny was one of the best characters even if she was only in 16 episodes. The four-times-married demon-hunting former-flowerchild’s life would have been amazing especially given how badass she is even in her old age and after death. also … she’s so cool!
Penny Halliwell protecting her daughter and granddaughters would be a prequel worth watching but there were so many other choices for a reboot including…
Next Gen – Focusing on the children of Charmed
Each charmed one (except Prue) had three children each, a new generation of the power of three and the first two already have built personalities and lives. Wyatt (Wes Ramsey) and Chris (Drew Fuller) are the first two children of Piper Halliwell. The actors would need to change because they got old but the characters would be more interesting to watch as fans are emotionally invested. Because of the time travel that’s extremely popular in the show we got to see a 22 year old Chris and a 25 year old Wyatt and I care more about their FUTURE than some random’s past. Also if they want new characters they have 7 other children they can play with including three cupid-witch hybrids and an adopted mortal surrounded by witches. Missed opportunity!
Prequels are generally bad. I said it. Star Wars, X-Men, and about a million horror movies have been ruined by prequels so why? Seriously leave well enough alone move forward not backward!
You may have guessed that this is just a rant and i will probably watch the reboot anyway. I still strongly disagree with everything the reboot stands for and will always love the original series that made me want to fight imaginary demons with my two sisters. To end here’s a clip of the best Charmed one-liners from my favourite season.
